Eppur si muove, 2024
2024 marked Nancy Karp + Dancers return to the Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco, California since performing “Overlapping Lines and Curves” in 1981. The space was formerly the Rotunda of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In honor of the occasion, the company premiered Eppur si muove, a new work responding to the Atrium’s classical volumes and voids, while also drawing inspiration from Karp’s studies of nature, particularly the circular patterns of migrating birds.
Karp chose the title for its resonance with circular motion throughout nature. The phrase Eppur si muove is ascribed to the 17th-century scientist and heretic, Galileo Galilei, who after being forced to recant his claims that the Earth moves around the Sun, doubled down on the fact of the Earth’s heliocentric orbit.
Eppur si muove has been set to an expanded version of Samuel Adams’ work for string quartet and percussion, titled “Sundial.”
