Arashi/Storm, 1992

The gestures and movement phrases for this work have been abstracted from portraits of Bauhaus and Russian Constructivist & Suprematist* artists and their work, specifically the seminal Malevich “Suprematist Painting, 1917-1918”. The dance does not attempt to imitate or interpret the artists’ work, but rather look to the essence of their form, the rhythm of abstract planes, and economic use of material; united with gesture and movement phrases, color, shape and space.

Music composed by Terry Riley, “In C” recorded by the Shanghai Film Orchestra was used by special arrangement with the composer. Costumes by Sandra Woodall.

*  The Constructivist and Suprematist movements in visual art, which rose out of the 1917 Russian Revolution and flourished in the 1920’s, ran parallel to the Bauhaus school in Germany.
