BART, 1974
BART, the first site-specific dance work choreographed by Nancy Karp, was created for the Bay Area Rapid Transit system’s stations and trains. The choreography, for ten dancers, utilized exaggerated pedestrian movement found at the stations – running for the train, lining up, reading, sleeping and so forth. Dancers performed a single given task in each station. This task was repeated until a train traveling west would arrive. The dancers would then enter the train and begin performing a new task, such as changing their seat or the way they were facing every 10 seconds, until the train reached the next stop. They would then exit the train car and begin performing a new task in the new station. This continued through a series of four San Francisco BART stations, from the Embarcadero Station west to Civic Center.
