Reminiscence, 1978
A work for 5 dancers who move in simple phrases in varied geometric floor patterns. The music, composed for American Gamelan instruments consists of a series of progressions for gong, kempul, and slentem, interspersed with dancers’ movement phrases include rhythmic stomping. The sound of the footfalls becomes part of the rhythmic sound structure.
From original program notes:
“I am interested in composing pieces that use a minimal amount of movement vocabulary. My work is influenced by my study of South Indian classical music and dance. I am concerned with rhythms, played against one another or in and out of synch with each other. Movements are stripped to their bare essentials. Sounds are arrived at through movement.”
